Film Recommendation - Like Stars on Earth (Taare Zameen Par)

Recently, I finally got time to watched the popular bollywood film 3 idiots. I was very attracted by the film and the charm of the characters, especially Aamir Khan. I looked him up and found out that not only is he an excellent actor, he is also a producer and director of Hindi films. I ran into a film that he directed in 2007 called Taare Zameen Par (Every Child is Special); I would like to recommend this film to teachers and parents out there.

It tells the story of a boy who does poorly in school but has outstanding talent in art. All adults around this little boy are so disappointed in him except one - his new art teacher. This art teacher suspect that the boy has dyslexia and together, they overcome the disability and let the special talent shines.

Taare Zameen Par is also the first Indian film purchased by Walt Disney Home Entertainment. It was reproduced into DVD in 2010 under the name Like Stars on Earth.

Show recommendation April 2011 - Czech Puppetry

If you ever make a trip to Eastern Europe, Prague is a city you cannot miss. I love the city - from its castle to its wooden toys, and of course their famous puppet theatre! When you walk down any street in prague, you can see a little shops that sell marionettes, like the one below:

My favorite puppet shop Prague (2009)

Inside the shop - many different kinds of marionettes/puppets!
Puppet theatre has a long history in Czech culture. Watching a puppet show in Prague was an exciting experience for me; I'm sure children will feel the same way!

In April 2011, a group of famous puppeteers from North Czech Republic, Naïve Theatre Liberec, will bring this fascinating form of theatre art to Hong Kong. They will be putting on 3 performances of Alibaba and 40 Thieves, between 7-9 April in HK City Hall and Shatin Town Hall. The performance is suitable for children 6+.

Show recommendation Feb/Mar 2011 - Painting with light

Light and darkness - day in and day out, we let these two most natural phenomenons pass by without even noticing it.

A group of creative artists from the UK (POWERPLANT) have cleverly manipulated the power of light and darkness.  Any garden can become their canvas at night; as dusk fall, the light of magic begins. You may want to watch a slide show below to see what this project is about.

How would you describe it? Fascinating? Dreamy? Spooky? It's definitely something that I have never seen before but would love to experience it in person!   Hong Kong audience is so lucky!  This awesome "light exhibition" will be part of the Hong Kong Art Festival 2011

Our Kowloon Wall City Park will be Powerplant's canvas this time. The exhibition will be held between 18 February to 13 March, 2011. Please click HERE for the show details.

Do little people who borrow things exist? (Dec, 2010)

Recently, the famous production house, Studio Ghibli, in Japan has produced a cartoon that is inspired by The Borrowers, a classic children novel (see more details below)! The animated film is called Karigurashi Arrietty (借東西的小矮人 - 亞莉亞蒂). It will be in theatre on Christmas Day, 2010!! Here's its trailer.

The Borrowers is an awarding-winning children novel written by Mary Norton in 1952. This was elected as one of the 10 most important children novels in the past 70 years! After the success of this novel, a series of sequels about the borrowers followed.

The borrowers are little people who live in home of big people; they need to borrow things from the household in order to stay alive; but they have to do it secretly so that big people don't know about their existence.

A movie with the same name was produced in 1997. Watch the trailer below! I'm sure you'd be interested in watching it!

The Gruffalo in Hong Kong (Jan, 2011)

The name Julia Donaldson may not sound familiar to you but if you look at your toddler's bookshelf at home, you may own one or two books by her.

I have recommended her book Stick Man earlier. Other than the Stickman, Ms Donaldson's other book, The Gruffalo, has also become live on stage.

GOOD NEWS for Hong Kong audience! Gruffalo will be coming to Hong Kong in Janurary 2011. Please click HERE for ticket information.

Another book that I'd like to recommend here is Cave Baby. It is about an adventure of a little baby riding through beautiful landscape on the back of a mammoth. It is illustrated by one of my favorite illustrator, Emily Gravett.

Show Recommendation - A Soldier's Story

The Hong Kong Sinfonietta will be putting on a production on 15 October, 2010 at the HKAPA called "A Soldier's Story."

IT will be a multimedia production fusing music, dance and narration (in Mandarin). The program consists of pieces by Igor Stravinsky. Talented dancers and artists have made the musical performance more lively.

I do recommend this show to older children. Here is a trailer that the RTHK has produced.

Stick Man by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler

Stick Man is a wonderful story about the adventure of a stick - certianly, he's no ordinary stick, but he is mistaken to be one!  After being swept away, his adventure begins...hm...I wonder what can Stick Man be?  Perhaps a snowman's arm?  Or a boy could have pick him up and turn him into part of a slingshot!  Oh, the worst thing is to become part of the firewood...he can, then, never return to where he actually belongs - the family tree!!

Well, not only is Stick Man a great story book, it has become alive on stage!!

A theatre group from UK will be putting on the Stick Man show in the HKAPA Drama Theatre.  Tickets are on sale now!!  (though the show date is not until early October) You can click here to access HK ticketing's Stick Man page.

Here is a preview of what the show will be like (same theatre group):
